Large, sometimes massive sculptures embellish the courtyards, piazzas, and archways throughout Lucca’s historic center. This year, one of the largest pieces, created in the workshop/laboratory, turned out to be too big to pass through the doors, preventing it from being moved outdoors. The sculpture, titled “Swallow’s Flight,” is currently displayed inside the Mercato del Carmine building as a special exhibit (ticket required). If you’re in Lucca this month, be sure to see it—it reaches up to the roof and is a beautiful, graceful work of art. A guide provides explanations (in Italian) about the sculpture’s creation, shares fascinating information about Lubica (celebrating 20 years in 2024), past exhibitions, and the history of the Old Mercato building itself.
