During the long weekend, my partner and I had the pleasure of staying at Marrable’s Hotel, a charming 4-star venue located in Clerkenwell, London. We had been planning a getaway to London for quite some time. Having lived in the city previously, we knew which areas to avoid (the typical tourist traps!) and chose this hotel for its proximity to Shoreditch—without the Shoreditch price tag!
Our weekend included catching up with friends over lunch, enjoying dinner together, and watching a movie. Marrable’s Hotel ensured our stay was delightful, prompting me to write a personal review to share my experience and highlight the sustainable initiatives the hotel is undertaking.
First Impressions of Marrable’s Hotel
Marrable’s Hotel is located on Clerkenwell Road, overlooking the picturesque St. John’s Square. It’s easily accessible from Farringdon train and tube station, as well as by bus (with a stop just a few minutes away). Additionally, key attractions like the Barbican (14 minutes), Sadler’s Wells (15 minutes), and Old Street (15 minutes) are all within walking distance.
Upon entering, we were greeted by a cozy lobby featuring two reception desks and two elevators. The reception operates 24/7, and we were warmly welcomed and checked in swiftly. The lift opened up to our floor, designed in a U-shape, allowing access from both sides.
The hotel exudes a calm ambiance with a subdued decor. The entrance is adorned with a couple of simple trees, and although there are splashes of green, gold, and red throughout, the hotel’s overall style remains somewhat elusive. A room under renovation to the right of the reception might have contributed to the slightly inconsistent aesthetic. Nevertheless, the hotel was impeccably clean and well-organized.
Our Deluxe Queen Room
For our one-night stay, we decided to upgrade to a Deluxe Queen room for a small additional fee and it was worth it! Accustomed to sleeping in a king-size bed at home, a regular queen-size bed can often feel like a downgrade for us. The moment we entered our room, we were welcomed by the bathroom (partially separated by a wall), a queen-size bed, a desk, two vibrant armchairs, and a small shelf with complimentary bottled water and glassware. Everything was pristine and neatly arranged. The bathroom was equipped with fresh bath towels, hand towels, flannels, and incredibly soft robes.
The room’s decor, however, felt somewhat incoherent. The Deluxe Queen room featured a striking red LED backlight, a blue throw on the bed, and a floral black print on the wall that complemented the armchairs. Nonetheless, the view over St. John’s Square was delightful, and the ample mirrors and natural light made the space very inviting.
In addition to standard amenities, we were pleasantly surprised to find a welcome note and chocolates—a delightful touch. A small folder containing a QR code for room service and our Wi-Fi password was included with our keycard pamphlet.
I slept exceptionally well at Marrable’s Hotel. The bed was comfortable with two pillows per person and a cozy throw. We could easily adjust the room’s thermostat to our liking. Although there was a bit of noise from door slamming in the morning, the overall ambience was peaceful throughout the night.
Sustainability at Marrable’s Hotel
Marrable’s Hotel has been designed with sustainability in mind, although this aspect is subtly integrated. Having stayed at numerous eco-friendly accommodations, I felt the hotel could emphasize its sustainable efforts more prominently. The construction features, such as additional glazing and passive ventilation, showcase solid eco-credentials. There are also lovely amenities, including natural skincare products from the luxury brand Verden. The hotel encourages guests to re-use towels during their stay, and I appreciated the communal kitchen on each floor, where we could help ourselves to drinks, reducing the need for single-use items in the room.
Overall Rating: 7/10
In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Marrable’s Hotel. The service was impeccable, and while I’d love to see a more cohesive interior design and a stronger focus on sustainability, these are minor points. I believe there is room for improvement to truly deliver a 4-star experience; however, the hotel offers very reasonable rates. We had a comfortable stay and would definitely return. If you’re seeking a London hotel away from tourist traps, I highly recommend Marrable’s.
