Visiting Japan in the spring is a truly enchanting experience. In the early months of the year, the country awakens in vibrant green, inviting travelers to enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms and pleasant weather. This is the perfect time for outdoor strolls, as people eagerly anticipate the warmth of summer.
In our blog series, My Favourite Small Group Tour, we connect with our tour leaders—those who expertly guide our excursions—to discover what makes each tour special. Today, Fergal shares his enthusiasm for our springtime adventure, Spring Elegance.
This tour features numerous visits to stunning gardens in Tokyo and Kanazawa, as well as a trip to an open-air art museum in Hakone. It provides ample opportunities to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of Japan as nature begins to bloom once again.
Springtime in Japan is magical. The cherry blossom trees burst into vibrant colors, creating picturesque photo opportunities. The weather during this season is generally milder compared to the scorching summer heat, making it accessible for people of all ages and mobility levels to enjoy various activities.
Spring Elegance showcases some of the best experiences Japan has to offer in one complete itinerary. From breathtaking gardens and ancient castles to soothing hot springs, the warm hospitality of traditional ryokans, and a mix of city and rural living, this tour is truly ideal for anyone who loves Japan!
This tour includes my favorite destination in all of Japan—Takayama. Rich in history, it boasts a captivating old town filled with narrow streets and wooden merchant houses from the Edo period. These remarkable buildings were constructed by the same artisans who created some of the finest shrines and temples in Kyoto, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship in every detail.
The locals are incredibly friendly, and the food is a delight. Be sure to experience the multi-course kaiseki dinner served Japanese-style on low tables with tatami mats at your ryokan. And there’s always time to enjoy a glass of sake or two on the side.
After exploring the lively city of Matsumoto, which is framed by mountains and home to the impressive “Black Crow” castle, you’ll have the chance to savor delicious noodles at Kobayashi Soba. This charming spot provides the perfect rest after a day of walking.
In Takayama, don’t miss the aptly named Center 4 Burgers, where you can sample Hida beef. While it may not be as renowned as Kobe or Wagyu, it still boasts a distinct high-quality flavor that is sure to impress.
The Mitsui Garden Hotel, Kanazawa enjoys a prime location just a short stroll from the Kenrokuen Gardens, making it a favorite among our clients. The restaurant, Noukabanzai, also receives high praise for its Obanzai Breakfast Buffet, which highlights locally sourced ingredients and traditional cooking techniques from the Kaga and Noto regions.
Meanwhile, the Tanabe Ryokan in Takayama offers a beautiful setting with a central location. It serves as a comforting haven for our travelers, ensuring you feel both cared for and at ease in a traditional Japanese atmosphere.
Tokyo is a city that never sleeps, providing endless options for nightlife. In the Asakusa district, you’ll find a variety of cozy bars, many with English-speaking staff and a relaxed ambiance. One such place is Not Suspicious Bar, featuring a unique decor made up of hundreds of messages written on slips of paper by previous patrons. Their motto? No Charge, No Tax, Not Suspicious. What does that mean? You’ll have to find out for yourself!
