New Car Entry Regulations for the Amalfi Coast in 2022 – A Guide for Passionate Travelers to Italy

Date:

The towns along the Amalfi Coast have introduced new traffic regulations to manage the overwhelming number of tourists visiting the area. The narrow, single-lane road—once a donkey trail that clings to the cliffs overlooking the sea—simply cannot handle the volume of traffic, leading to lengthy delays during the summer months.

The new rules will affect the 35 km stretch of road between Vietri sul Mare and Positano.

During peak hours in the tourist season, drivers will need to follow a new alternate number plate system.

If your vehicle’s number plate ends in an odd number, you will be permitted to use the road on odd-numbered days. Conversely, if your number plate ends in an even number, you will have access on even-numbered days.

This system is modeled after the Pico y Placa regulations implemented in several heavily congested cities in Colombia.

The regulations will be in effect from 10 am to 6 pm on weekends, starting from mid-June 2022 and ending in late September 2022.

The rules will also apply throughout August and during the Easter Holy Week holiday. Public buses and taxis are exempt from this system, as are residents of the 13 towns in the area.

Anas, the authority responsible for managing the roads, has additionally banned all vehicles longer than 10.36 meters. Caravans and vehicles with trailers will only be allowed to use the road between midnight and 6:30 am.
