I can’t imagine traveling without my Pacsafe Ultimatesafe 22L anti-theft backpack. It has traveled with me across Thailand, Laos, Turkey, five African countries, and Greece.
If you’ve ever discussed travel gear with me, you know I’m a big fan of Pacsafe products. I may have even inspired you to purchase one. Their range, from suitcases to wallets, empowers travelers to outsmart thieves targeting their belongings.
Having already owned a Pacsafe handbag, I was thrilled when the company sent me the Pacsafe Ultimatesafe 22L Anti-Theft Backpack for review.
Size
This backpack is available in two sizes: 22L and 32L. I chose the 22L because I wanted a size that’s compact enough to function as both my carry-on and daily exploration bag.
Here’s what I can fit in the main compartment:
In the smaller compartment, which features three pockets, I can store items I usually keep in a small purse: my iPhone, battery case, earbuds, sunglasses, a tissue pack, lip balm, TSA-approved toiletries, and more.
Quality
Thanks to its exceptional design, this nylon backpack is both durable and ergonomically comfortable. In case of any issues, Pacsafe products come with a five-year warranty.
The panel that rests against my back is well-padded, ensuring that none of the contents poke into me.
The backpack includes a removable, padded sleeve complete with a side pocket designed for a tablet or a 15-inch laptop—or both.
The shoulder straps are well-cushioned and crafted from soft fabric that feels gentle against the skin. They are also adjustable and padded, preventing discomfort even when the backpack is loaded with heavy items (which is often).
However, the waist belt is just a thin nylon strap—a bit disappointing. But as I rarely use it, I simply tuck the two ends into the side pockets, which can hold a water bottle and small items.
The padded top handle is convenient for quickly grabbing the bag.
The zippers operate smoothly.
Anti-Theft Features
Now, let’s dive into the exciting features.
The smaller exterior compartment is protected by Pacsafe’s patented eXomesh technology, which is a lightweight, slash-proof stainless steel wire mesh integrated into the material to thwart slash-and-run theft.
The backpack also includes a removable 12L pouch designed with the same eXomesh protection for added security. While it’s bulky and doesn’t fit in the main compartment, it can be utilized to secure the bag to a fixture in your hotel room using the stainless steel slash guard cable and padlock—essentially functioning as a portable safe.
I can secure the main compartment with a small zipper lock (not included with the backpack). Since I carry valuable camera equipment, this security feature is vital for me. Although it can be a hassle to lock and unlock every time I need something, it’s a necessary precaution.
The smaller compartment features an internal key/wallet ring and an outer zipper puller. By clipping the zipper to a secure hook upon closing it, I create an additional barrier to entry for pickpockets, making it a hassle for them to access my belongings.
Did you know that thieves can now steal your identity using an RFID reader from up to 10 feet away? They can scan your bag to steal personal information from the microchips embedded in your credit and ID cards and passport. To combat this, Pacsafe includes a pocket made from RFID-blocking material within the smaller compartment to safeguard your sensitive data.
The shoulder straps are constructed with slash-proof wire. One strap is equipped with a turn-and-lock security hook that can securely fasten to a fixture, protecting against bag snatchers.
I utilize this feature at restaurants and cafes, securing my bag to the chair. I’ve had my purse stolen right before my eyes in similar situations twice, so I remain vigilant. (Thieves can be incredibly skillful at their craft.)
Suggested Improvements
As much as I adore this backpack, I believe there are areas for enhancement:
- It would be great to see the eXomesh technology extended to the side and bottom panels.
- Additional protection from the elements would be beneficial. (As a temporary fix, I recommend buying a generic waterproof cover.)
- Adding light padding to the waist belt would improve comfort.
Performance of the Pacsafe Ultimatesafe 22L Anti-Theft Backpack
While my backpack remains intact, were any of its contents ever stolen during my travels? So far, I’ve been fortunate.
However, I did have one near miss. One evening in Rwanda, as I was taking photos, I turned to find a suspicious young man standing too close behind me. With few people around Lake Kivu at dusk, there was no reason for him to be just two feet away. He was accompanied by two teenagers watching from a distance. Once I noticed them, they casually walked away. Was the man attempting to reach into my backpack? I’m inclined to think so. Had he already tried? That remains uncertain.
Nevertheless, if I had been using a different backpack, I would have likely spent my travels anxiously looking over my shoulder, worrying about who was lurking too close or if my zippers were secure. Even if thieves never attempted to pickpocket me, the peace of mind this backpack provides is invaluable on the road. And that’s a wonderful feeling.
