On November 10, 2024, the European Union (EU) will introduce a new process called the European Entry/Exit System (EES). This marks a significant change in the EU’s travel policies, replacing the traditional method of physically stamping passports—a practice that has been in place for centuries—with digital passport stamping. This upgrade aims to improve border control efficiency and modernize Schengen visa requirements.
The primary goal of this new system is to track the short-term entries of non-EU travelers and ensure they do not overstay their allowed period.
Goodbye to Passport Stamps
Prior to the early 1900s, travelers needed to have their passports stamped physically for entry into the EU. However, with advancements in technology and digitalization, the EES will be entirely electronic, allowing travelers to complete their visa applications more quickly than before.
The EES, an advanced automated information technology system, will electronically capture and store vital travel information, including:
- Traveler’s name
- Type of travel document
- Biometric data (fingerprints and facial images)
- Date and location of entry and exit
This digital approach aims to streamline the border crossing process while enhancing security within the EU and modernizing Schengen visa requirements.
Improved Security and Efficiency
Albrecht Schmidt, an EU border security expert, highlights that the EES represents a major advancement in border management technology and Schengen visa requirements. Since most visitors come temporarily, the digital entry and exit system will facilitate easier monitoring of individuals who overstay their visas and may pose security risks.
The system is expected to expedite the screening process for travelers, reducing the time spent at border control points.
Maria Gonzalez, a public relations officer for the European Travel Commission, expressed optimism about the long-term benefits of the EES but acknowledged potential short-term challenges as travelers and border control officers adjust to the new system. She stated that ongoing communication with member states is crucial to ensure a smooth transition.
ETIAS: An Extra Layer of Security
In conjunction with the EES, the EU is also rolling out the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This online travel authorization will be mandatory for visa-exempt travelers entering the Schengen area and will be implemented gradually alongside the EES.
