Thousands tuned in to a national broadcast to witness a monumental celebration as Costa Rica took a groundbreaking step forward. At precisely 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, the Family Code of Costa Rica was automatically amended to abolish the sixth clause of article 14, which stated that marriage between individuals of the same sex was “legally impossible.”

This pivotal moment has been years in the making, culminating in significant progress in 2018 when the Inter-American Court of Human Rights declared that all signatory nations must permit same-sex marriage. This ruling is binding for numerous Latin American countries, including Costa Rica.
