Snapshots from Two French Markets: A Taste of Italy in Two Parts

Date:

While I have enjoyed many markets, the ones in France are truly some of my favorites. From the charming weekly outdoor markets in Uzes and Chalon sur Saône to the larger permanent markets in Avignon and Lyon, each one captivates me, enticing me to savor the aromas, taste the culinary delights, shop for fresh ingredients, and cook delicious meals.

So, when I recently traveled to France and spent time in both Lyon and Avignon before embarking on a Rhône River cruise, visiting the markets in these two cities was definitely at the top of my “must-see” list.

The market in Lyon is the larger of the two. Its name was changed in 2006 to honor the legendary French chef Paul Bocuse, and it is now called Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse. This market is a shrine to French gastronomy and a tribute to one of its most renowned chefs.
