Snowshoeing Opportunities Near Merritt
Establishing the Nicola Valley as Your Snowshoe Base Camp
Embark on Snowshoeing Adventures in the Nicola Valley
I have previously discussed snowshoeing near Merritt, but I thought it would be helpful to highlight additional nearby locations. Snowshoeing is an integral part of winter in Merritt and the Nicola Valley. As soon as the snow blankets the ground, we strap on our snowshoes and set off to explore the countless winter adventure spots in the area.
Hamilton Hill: A Snowshoeing Destination Near Merritt
If you prefer a more relaxed and unstructured snowshoeing experience, Hamilton Hill is an excellent choice. Unlike Kane Valley, which has clearly marked trails, Hamilton Hill offers vast open spaces where you can create your own path.
To reach Hamilton Hill from Merritt, take Highway 97C (the Connector) toward the Okanagan. The intersection will be on your right, approximately 2 km from the 286 exit off the Coquihalla. Please note that there are no advance warning signs for this intersection, so stay vigilant.
Kane Valley: A Must-Visit for Snowshoeing in the Nicola Valley
I would like to elaborate on Kane Valley, which I have mentioned before. The snowshoe trails can be accessed from the parking lots designated for skiing. It’s crucial to stay off the ski trails and adhere to the signage dedicated to snowshoeing.
Other bloggers at Experience Nicola Valley share in the enthusiasm for the fun to be had at Kane Valley. Be sure to check out the insightful thoughts of our prolific blogger, Tania Stewart.
To get to Kane Valley, drive up Highway 97C (the Connector) for about ten minutes, and keep an eye out for the signs.
Explore Snowshoeing at Helmer Lake Near Merritt, BC
Traveling north from Merritt on Highway 5 for about 15 minutes leads you to the Helmer Lake area, where several options are available. My favorite spot is at the forestry site by the lake; to access it, go under the highway and continue straight for about 1 km. Park at the forestry recreation site, strap on your snowshoes, and venture across the lake. As you reach the end of the lake, you will need to traverse a narrow green belt of trees to access the expansive open areas.
Alternatively, after passing under the overpass, take a right turn and drive to the powerline for more open spaces.
If you prefer a more wooded experience, don’t go under the highway. Instead, continue along the forest road for roughly 1 km until you reach a parking area, as long as it isn’t being used by forestry for staging their logs. Numerous logging roads are available in this area for exploration.
Essential Snowshoeing Tips Near Merritt
As with many outdoor activities, snowshoeing comes with its own set of risks. Therefore, before heading out, be sure to gather information on essential safety items, such as a first aid kit, layered clothing, food supplies, and a GPS. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the area by obtaining maps. You can contact BC Forestry Services for this purpose.
