If you're planning a visit to Alberobello, be sure to explore its charming streets. We've created an ideal walking tour that showcases the town's highlights, including the most iconic viewpoints, rooftop terraces, photography spots, and hidden gems.

This Alberobello walking tour is perfect for anyone wanting to experience the best of the town without being part of a guided group.

Starting at the parking lots on Via Indipendenza, near the town center, this walking tour follows a loop route that takes you past all the key sights in Alberobello. Feel free to take detours down side streets if something captures your interest.

This walking tour should take about 3 to 5 hours, depending on your stops for photos, shopping, and food, covering approximately 3.2 km (2 miles).

You can find multiple parking lots along Via Indipendenza as you enter Alberobello's heart. We recommend parking in one of these lots, with a small fee expected (we paid 6 euros for a full day in 2022).

As part of your journey, you will explore Rione Monti, the main tourist area where many trulli are now gift shops, restaurants, and wine bars. You'll also venture into Rione Aia Piccola, showcasing trulli used for residences and visitor accommodations.

We suggest starting your walking tour at 9:00 am. Most shops open at this hour, with some offering panoramic terraces that we highly recommend. An early start lets you beat the midday crowds, although you may still encounter some morning tour groups.

For a calmer experience, consider arriving by 8:30 am (or even earlier) to wander the streets at your own pace, before beginning the walking tour at 9:00 am.

Shops with a terrace (as indicated by signage) usually reserve it for customers only. A small purchase is required to access their terraces—with no minimum spending. For one place, we bought a bottle of water, and in another, a souvenir magnet.

Some souvenir shops mentioned here may not have a distinct name, so we'll provide their addresses or a brief description to help you locate them.

Using the Google Maps app on your mobile device can be helpful while following this walking tour (you can download our map and follow it). Otherwise, keep an eye out for street names displayed on the sides of buildings.

From the intersection of Via Indipendenza and Via Monte Nero, head uphill on Via Monte Nero. You won’t have to walk far before you come across a shop on your right with a garden-like exterior and a garden terrace accessible from inside. While it’s not a rooftop view, it's still a lovely spot to enjoy. We made a small purchase to enjoy the view from their terrace.

Continue uphill on Via Monte Nero. When the path makes a sharp right turn, you will find Trullo Siamese (marked on Google Maps as “Trullo Siamese monumento negozio souvenir”). This unique trullo features two conjoined domes and two entrances, hence its name. If it's open (as of 2022, entry was free), you can go inside to explore.

At the end of Via Monte Nero (where the short wall on your left ends), you'll reach a street junction. To your right is a shop with a rooftop terrace called Maffei Sgobba Group on Google Maps. This is our favorite rooftop view in Alberobello. You’ll need to make a small purchase, spending a few euros, to access the terrace.

At the end of this street, the last trullo on your left is The Smallest Trullo of Alberobello (Il Trullo Più Piccolo di Alberobello), which now serves as a souvenir shop.
As you continue along Via Monte Michele past Bar “Rione Monti” di Palmisano Caterina, keep an eye out for a group of trulli with symbols painted on their roofs. This spot is among our favorites for photography, and we visited it throughout the day.

The church serves as a turnaround point. Retrace your steps, then turn left onto Via Monte Sabotino. Bar “Rione Monti” di Palmisano Caterina is at the intersection. Continue along Via Monte Sabotino until it curves right; further along, you will find the Romantic Trulli. This picturesque location offers a wonderful chance for photographs, and since it's tucked away from the main street, it's a nice escape from the crowds.

Alberobello in Miniature

As you approach The Smallest Trullo of Alberobello, watch for the shop on your right called Alberobello in Miniature (listed on Google Maps as Annese Orazio). Inside, you'll find an impressive miniature model of Rione Monti. Viewing this display is free, though donations are welcome, and there is a donation box located just before you reenter the shop.

When you leave Alberobello in Miniature, continue downhill. The next two shops on the right share a rooftop terrace. We made a small purchase at one of the shops before heading up to the terrace for this view.

Continue downhill a few more steps and you’ll see Ristorante “L’Aratro” di Domenico Laera on the left, featuring beautifully trimmed plants and a heart-shaped outline on the roof.

Walk a little further past this restaurant, then look back up the street. This is another excellent spot for a beautiful photo of Alberobello.

At the bottom of the hill, you’ll arrive at the main road. Turn right and look for “La Lira” focacceria on your right. This is a fantastic place to try a Pasqualino—a sandwich made with tuna, capers, salami, and cheese that is a local delicacy.

If you’re not hungry yet, we’ll recommend another spot to grab a Pasqualino towards the end of this tour.

Cross the main road and walk through the town square, staying close to the parking lot on your right. You’ll find a staircase ahead; instead of taking it, follow the road to the right of the stairs, which is Via Brigata Regina.

As you walk uphill, look for a yellow sign labeled Belvedere on an open doorway on your right (before reaching the hilltop). Step through that doorway and follow the path leading through Villa Comunale Belvedere Parco until you get a spectacular view of Rione Monti.

Standing in front of the doorway and looking towards Rione Monti, turn left onto Via Duca degli Abruzzi. It is marked on Google Maps as Trulli – Rione Aia Piccola (UNESCO).

Take a walk around the right side of this trullo, then turn left onto Via Giuseppe Verdi.

Follow Via Giuseppe Verdi and look for Via Galileo Galilei on your right. This is a worthwhile short detour to see more trulli.

Turn immediately to the right at Piazza del Popolo, and about a block and a half later, you’ll see Casa D’Amore on your right.

This historic home, built in 1797, is significant as it was the first in the area constructed with mortar (“in cotto”). Previously, trulli were built by simply stacking stones to facilitate easier dismantling to avoid taxes.

This large trullo, dating back to the early 1700s, was the family home of a wealthy priest named Cataldo Perta. Unique for its elevated floor (having a second level) and masonry staircase, Trullo Sovrano is a National Monument and features on the UNESCO World Heritage list. You won’t have to walk far before you find La Pagnottella on your right—a sandwich shop that provides another opportunity to try a Pasqualino.

After rounding the corner at La Pagnottella, you’ll come to Via Brigata Regina. Turn right and follow this street downhill to return to the main road where your walking tour began.
