When we asked Marco, and Marta from Cascina Albano in Barbaresco to share insights about their wine production in the Langhe, they responded: “Tasting our wines feels like savoring our vineyards. We say this proudly since it has always been the goal of our winery.” We find this intriguing! So, let’s immerse ourselves in their world.
Cascina Albano has a unique origin: although located in Barbaresco, we do not produce the renowned Nebbiolo grape used for that prestigious wine. We view this as an opportunity rather than a limitation; it allows us to focus on other grape varieties characteristic of the region.
By merging tradition with innovation, we strive to capture every nuance of the region through our products. We are committed to our philosophy and techniques that blend ancestral methods with contemporary practices.
Our main grape varieties are Arneis, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Freisa, each vinified separately using distinct methods to enhance their unique traits. By harmonizing tradition and innovation, we attempt to express the diverse characteristics of our land through our wines. While this makes us a slightly unconventional winery, we firmly believe in our approach, which marries age-old practices with new techniques.
As an example of our innovation, our Classic Method “Perschers” was born from Marco’s creativity in 2007. The name, which means “as a joke” in Italian, reflects our curiosity about how our most cultivated white variety, Arneis, would fare as a sparkling wine.
Marco decided to produce a Classic Method Brut Nature with a minimum of 48 months aging on the lees, creating a wine with remarkable body and character. Just a single glass of Perschers reveals the distinctive qualities of the soil in which it grows, showcasing the versatility of this unique grape variety. What began as a lighthearted experiment has become a favorite that delights all who taste it.
Marco’s choice to produce a Classic Method Brut Nature with at least 48 months of aging on the lees imparts an exceptional body and expressiveness.
We believe our grandfather Marco would have adored it as well, as he dedicated himself to crafting wines that highlight the terroir and the local varieties as best as possible.
If you speak with Natale, the second generation of the winemaking family, he’ll admit he was initially skeptical. However, he is thrilled to have supported the project and now finds it to be “pröpi bun,” which means really good in the local Piedmont dialect. The spirit of experimentation initiated by him in the 90s continues today as he embraced new technologies while preserving the essence of our wines. His innovations were primarily implemented in the winery, where he sought to leverage new knowledge without distorting the wine’s personality.
Our Classic Method is just one example; all our wines reflect the true style of our winery. We understand that we have an ecosystem to cherish and enhance.
By prioritizing the preservation of our land and its integrity, using natural and organic techniques, we cultivate healthy grapes that allow us to create wines that authentically express their origins. In the winery, we also adhere to the principles of naturalness throughout all stages of production. We focus on ensuring the production process is thoughtfully guided and supported.
Utilizing indigenous yeasts for fermentation, carefully applying technology, and aligning our interventions with the most favorable lunar phases enable our wines to develop naturally, showcasing strength and expressiveness that continue to surprise even us, who have been producing for generations.
This accomplishment would not have been possible without the expertise passed down from our grandfather and father. Their legacy, enriched by our generation’s understanding, teaches us that traditional methods and modern innovations are not adversaries but partners. When thoughtfully applied, they allow us to optimize the use of our raw materials.
Using indigenous yeasts, careful technology application, and aligning with the best lunar phases, nurtures our wines, allowing them to evolve naturally, showcasing strength and expressiveness.
Being a family of producers has enabled us to grow up playing among the vineyards near our home, where responsible cultivation practices have always been upheld. This upbringing allowed us to explore the winemaking process, absorbing its aromas and learning the importance of enhancing each grape variety to create expressive artisanal wines. Most importantly, it has instilled in us a profound passion for winemaking. Our unwavering love for our wines drives us to improve continually and face daily challenges head-on.
Cascina Albano was born from our grandfather’s passion and continues to thrive because we share the same commitment to showcasing our wines through their purest forms, always keeping an eye on the future.
