Established in 1842, the New York Philharmonic, commonly known as NY Phil, is not only one of the most prestigious institutions in New York City but also one of the oldest musical organizations in the United States. After two years of extensive renovations, the symphony orchestra is all set to launch its 2022-2023 season in its home at David Geffen Hall, located at Lincoln Center, beginning this October.
This ambitious $550 million renovation has completely transformed David Geffen Hall, making it more accessible to diverse audiences and providing a range of unique spaces suitable for various performances, from intimate gatherings to large broadcasts. The updated venue features a beautifully designed Grand Promenade, which includes an impressive bar, and boasts state-of-the-art sound technology and acoustics to enhance the musical experience. Additional amenities include a welcome center, a café, and a “sidewalk studio” for smaller performances and experimental programming (details below).
To celebrate the opening of the season on October 7, which will include 150 concerts, NY Phil is organizing a month-long festival. This event will feature renowned musicians and composers, concerts addressing contemporary social and political themes, and a world premiere by trumpeter Etienne Charles, celebrated for his unique fusion of Trinidadian music and jazz. More performance announcements are anticipated in the upcoming months, including a new pay-what-you-can series called NY Phil @ Noon, held in the sidewalk studio.
For families, NY Phil offers the Young People’s Concerts, a beloved concert series that has been a tradition for over 50 years, originally popularized by Leonard Bernstein, as well as family-friendly holiday concerts featuring Handel’s “Messiah.”
