After spending four exciting days exploring the area, I’ve distilled my findings into the top spots in Rochester for playing, dining, and enjoying drinks.
The streets of Rochester showcase a harmonious blend of architectural styles, colors, and patterns. There’s a rhythm to the city that feels inviting, with historic buildings seamlessly complementing modern designs. The visual appeal here is genuine and approachable, devoid of pretentiousness.
Rochester boasts a rich industrial heritage, largely credited to its most notable resident, George Eastman, the founder of Kodak. Does Kodak Film ring a bell? If not, perhaps you’re familiar with Kodak cameras? Don’t worry; you’ll learn more about it shortly. The legacy of Eastman continues to shape Rochester’s cultural fabric today, with institutions like the Eastman School of Music and the George Eastman Museum drawing visitors from around the globe. However, it’s Rochester’s dynamic arts scene that truly breathes life into the city.
With a population of just over 200,000, Rochester uniquely combines small-town charm with big-city amenities. It’s a hidden gem for travelers seeking unique experiences off the typical tourist path.
Where is Rochester?
Rochester is located along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, about a three-hour drive from Toronto, featuring a beautiful route that passes through wine country. It’s conveniently positioned between Buffalo and Syracuse, making it easily accessible from both cities—just an hour from Buffalo and approximately 90 minutes from Syracuse. Albany is three hours to the east, and New York City is around a 5 to 6-hour drive or a quick flight from Rochester’s international airport, making it an ideal spot for a weekend getaway.

Rochester is affectionately known as the “Flower City,” a name I find delightful. As a fan of gardens and flowers, this city’s identity resonates with me. Initially, Rochester earned the moniker “Flour City” due to its prosperous flour milling industry along the Genesee River.
However, by the mid-19th century, Rochester transformed into a leading center for horticulture, thus adopting the “Flower City” name. This change was propelled by its thriving nurseries and the annual Lilac Festival celebrated every May. Today, this nickname is reflected in the city’s abundant parks, gardens, and green spaces.
Best Places in Rochester To Play
Rochester is filled with fantastic places for adventure, fun, and a dash of history, making it an ideal destination for families, friends, couples, and solo travelers alike. Whether you’re interested in interactive exhibits at The Strong National Museum of Play, exploring the intriguing history of photography at the George Eastman Museum, or enjoying breathtaking views at High Falls, Rochester offers some of the best opportunities to play and explore. Each attraction showcases the city’s creativity, innovation, and natural beauty.
#1 The Strong National Museum of Play
The Strong National Museum of Play is the ultimate destination for play for all ages! Located in the heart of downtown Rochester, it stands as Upstate New York’s largest year-round cultural attraction—a true paradise for anyone who enjoys playtime. This isn’t just a place for children; adults can also spend an entire day exploring, playing, and revisiting childhood memories through toys and games.
With two extensive floors filled with hands-on, interactive exhibits covering an entire city block, you’ll be immersed in the world’s largest collection of toys, dolls, superheroes, and games. Whether you’re reflecting on the history of video games and pinball, stepping into the universe of American comic book heroes, or becoming a game piece on a life-sized board, this museum awakens the inner child in everyone.
Upon entering, you can ride the beautifully restored 1918 carousel, stroll through the indoor tropical butterfly garden, or grab a bite at the food court or classic diner. I even spotted a group of dads relaxing at the diner during my visit!
One of The Strong’s most fascinating features is its three halls of fame. The National Toy Hall of Fame allows you to get up close with the toys that define generations. I saw numerous toys from my own childhood and some my parents might have played with. The Toy Industry Hall of Fame features legends like Walt Disney and Jim Henson, while the World Video Game Hall of Fame explores how electronic games have reshaped play, learning, and social connection.
If you’re curious about the history of the museum, be sure to look for Mabel, the doll that started it all.
The “Women In Games” section particularly resonated with me. It emphasizes the remarkable contributions of female pioneers in the video game industry, showcasing their roles in design, development, and leadership. As a woman in the television post-production industry, where many women are now thriving, I can relate to the hurdles they faced. The exhibit is a powerful homage to women who have made significant strides in gaming history, making it one of the best places in Rochester to pause and reflect on the progress we’ve made over the years.
The Strong Museum of Play features an impressive collection of pinball machines and video game consoles from various eras. It’s a hands-on experience where you can actually play classic games like The Addams Family and Black Knight.
I must say, The Strong is a must-visit in Rochester. It’s not merely a museum—it’s a full-fledged celebration of fun and creativity that will leave you wanting to return. I wish I could have spent more time there, but I had other commitments. I can already foresee a return trip with my kids; I’m unsure if they will share the same connection with Sesame Street as I do, but it felt like a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
#2 George Eastman Museum
The George Eastman Museum in Rochester is a must-see for photography, film, and history enthusiasts. Founded in 1947, it’s the oldest photography museum in the world. Not only does it house an immense collection of images, cameras, and photographic equipment, but it’s also located in the historic home of George Eastman, the founder of Kodak, along with picturesque gardens—an exquisite Colonial Revival mansion built in 1905.
Walking through this impeccably preserved mansion feels like stepping back into the early 1900s, giving you a firsthand glimpse into how Eastman’s innovations revolutionized our approach to capturing and sharing moments.
The museum’s collection features over 400,000 photographs from 14,000 different photographers, allowing you to embark on an incredible journey through the history of this artistic medium!
The museum also includes the Dryden Theatre, where classic films and unique screenings bring art and history to life.
The legacy of George Eastman in Rochester is remarkable. He transformed the photography world by making cameras and film accessible to everyone, not just professionals. My first camera was a Kodak 100 film camera, given to me when I was around 10 or 11 years old. It ignited my passion for photography, and that passion eventually led me to my career in film and television. Here I am today, thriving in content creation!
Under George Eastman’s guidance, Kodak became a household name, but his influence extended beyond photography. He generously donated millions to education, healthcare, and the arts, founding the Eastman School of Music, now recognized as one of the world’s leading conservatories. His legacy continues to enrich Rochester’s thriving arts community, and the George Eastman Museum pays tribute to a visionary who transformed photography and left an indelible mark on the city.
#3 High Falls
High Falls in Rochester is a stunning natural treasure and one of the city’s most picturesque spots. This breathtaking 96-foot waterfall, located in downtown Rochester, feels almost otherworldly. It’s not just a beautiful sight (after all, who doesn’t love a waterfall?), but it also holds significant historical value in Rochester’s industrial narrative.
In the 19th century, the falls were vital for powering flour mills and other industries that helped Rochester evolve into a bustling hub. Today, you can enjoy stunning views from a pedestrian bridge (currently under construction), and the area is dotted with exciting places to explore, like the rooftop of the Genesee Brew House. A walking path along the gorge originates from the parking lot of the Genesee Brew House (just a heads up—don’t park there unless you’re a Brew House patron). Also, there’s an elevated concrete viewing platform. Currently, there isn’t a decent viewpoint from the High Falls neighborhood, despite Google Maps directing you there—my attempt to find it was unsuccessful because previous structures have been closed off.
What’s next for High Falls? New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has announced plans for Phase 2 of ROC the Riverway, which includes the creation of a new High Falls State Park in downtown Rochester. This park will offer public access to the gorge for the first time in centuries. I can’t wait to return and experience it!
#4 Village of Fairport
If time permits, take a leisurely stroll through the charming village of Fairport, just a short drive away. Here, you can walk along the Erie Canal, browse local shops, and soak in the delightful small-town atmosphere, making it one of the area’s best-kept secrets! Whether you’re walking along the canal, enjoying a meal at a local café, or exploring quaint shops, Fairport perfectly blends small-town charm with an outdoor lifestyle. It’s also a fantastic place to rent a kayak or take a canal boat ride, making it a relaxing and picturesque escape just a short drive from Rochester. Bonus: don’t miss Iron Smoke Distillery while you’re there!
#5 Rochester Fringe Festival
The main reason for my recent trip to Rochester was to attend the Rochester Fringe Festival, and the performances were absolutely spectacular! The Rochester Fringe Festival is the kind of event where you can stumble into a show without any expectations and leave with your mind thoroughly blown! Over the years, this festival has showcased everything from experimental dance pieces to massive outdoor spectacles and intimate, thought-provoking plays. The festival occurs every fall, transforming Rochester into a vibrant hub for art lovers and creatives. The excitement spills into the streets, with spontaneous performances and installations enriching the city.

Best Places In Rochester To Eat
Rochester features a diverse mix of dining options to tantalize your taste buds. From the craft brews and relaxed atmosphere of Strangebird Brewing to the lively ambiance and inventive menu at Radio Social, there’s something to satisfy everyone. Start your day with breakfast at the vibrant Rochester Public Market, where local vendors offer fresh and delicious fare, or enjoy a cold drink with fantastic views at the Genesee Brew House. Pizza lovers will delight in Veneto Wood Fired Pizza, known for serving some of the finest pies in town. No matter where you choose to dine, these spots are among the best places in Rochester to eat and unwind!
#6 Strangebird Brewing
Strangebird Brewing is one of those must-visit spots in Rochester. This small, independent brewery has a cozy, laid-back atmosphere and features some truly creative beers on tap. They incorporate traditional brewing methods with modern twists, ensuring there’s always something unique to sample. The ambiance is casual yet trendy, making it an ideal spot to enjoy drinks with friends or relax after exploring the city.
While it could easily fit into the best places in Rochester to drink, Strangebird Brewing also excels as a dining destination! Their on-site restaurant features a menu designed to complement their brews, offering dishes ranging from wood-fired pizzas to inventive small plates. The kitchen focuses on fresh, local ingredients. Whether you’re in the mood for a snack or a full meal, Strangebird provides a warm, welcoming environment for a casual evening of great food and drinks in Rochester.
In the image below are my drinks: Savoir-Vivre 10, a Belgian tripel made wild, which I rated 3/5 on Untapped, and a Winnebago Warrior (West Coast IPA), along with dinner featuring a fried chicken sandwich and a smashed burger!
#7 Radio Social
Radio Social in Rochester is a fun, modern venue that combines bowling, great food, and drinks in one unique location. Its charm is enhanced by its setting in the historical Stromberg-Carlson building, once a hub for telephone and radio manufacturing (hence the name, Radio Social). This sprawling entertainment destination features not just bowling but also arcade games, shuffleboard, and more.
The food at Radio Social is just as remarkable, featuring a Mediterranean-inspired menu that elevates typical bowling alley fare. Whether you’re there for a casual bite or a complete meal, you can expect fresh, creative flavors. Among the dishes I enjoyed were lamb ragu pierogi and chicken wings, while I also sampled some delicious babaganoush hummus, though not pictured.
The lively atmosphere is perfect for a night out with friends or a casual date, making it one of the best places in Rochester to hang out, play games, and enjoy delectable food!
#8 Rochester’s Public Market
As part of my exploration of local flavors and culinary experiences, I visited Rochester’s famous Public Market. Since opening in 1905, the Rochester Public Market has served as a vital commercial hub. Located on Union Street, it initially provided local farmers and merchants a venue to sell their goods. Today, it has evolved into a year-round destination featuring fresh local produce, artisanal items, and international cuisine available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays throughout the year.
Local vendors and area farmers showcase fresh fruits and vegetables, ethnic delicacies, deli items, specialty sauces, organic beauty products, and much more for sale. Additionally, the market features an array of independent local businesses that sell clothing and other goods both within and surrounding the Market District.
The Market District houses a few spots for coffee and light breakfast options. Some popular breakfast recommendations include Public Provisions and Best Coffee In The Market, located in a series of buildings aligned along Union Street within the market. If you continue to the other side, you’ll find Juan & Maria’s Empanadas, Cherry’s European, and a must-visit: MRKT Squeeze Fresh Pressed Juice (located inside Shed B). While it’s hard to capture every vendor’s details, wandering through the market is worth it!
#9 Genesee Brew House
While Genesee Brew House could easily qualify as one of the best places in Rochester to enjoy drinks, its restaurant and view of High Falls earn it a special mention here as a dining destination.
Genesee Brew House is a must-visit for anyone exploring Rochester. Situated in a historic 19th-century brewery building, it elegantly blends history and contemporary craft beer culture. The Brew House aims to share The Genesee Brewery’s rich history, one of the oldest and largest continuously operating breweries in America. Here, you can sample classic Genesee beers while relishing spectacular views of High Falls from the rooftop patio. The food menu offers hearty pub-style fare.
A notable dish in Rochester’s culinary landscape is the Garbage Plate, a unique combination of comfort foods served on one plate. Although it’s not something I personally sampled, I’ve heard it typically begins with a base of home fries or macaroni salad, topped with cheeseburgers or hot dogs, and generously drenched in spicy meat sauce, mustard, onions, and ketchup. It’s a hearty and messy meal that originated at Nick Tahou Hots. If you want to dive into classic Rochester flavor, this is it.
The Genesee Brew House even has its own take on this dish—the Genny Plate. Featured below is their dog plate, alongside a buffalo chicken wrap—both are excellent choices based on your cravings!
Best Places In Rochester To Grab A Drink
Rochester features a lively drinking scene, offering an array of options, from wine tasting at Living Roots Wine & Co. to craft spirits at Black Button Distilling and local brews at Strangebird Brewery or Rohrbach Brewing Co. For whiskey lovers, Iron Smoke Distillery boasts rich flavors accompanied by live music.
Dating back to the 1800s, Rochester’s brewing history is anchored by Genesee Brewery, one of the oldest in the country, known for classics like Genesee Cream Ale. Today, it maintains its legacy by merging tradition with innovation while representing the city’s rich brewing heritage. I personally tried the Mango Peach Kolsch, rating it 3.75 on Untapped.

Living Roots Wine & Co. in Rochester is truly a special find! This family-run urban winery brings a unique twist by blending the best of New York’s Finger Lakes with Australian wine regions, offering a global wine experience right in the city. Situated in a beautifully refurbished building that houses modern tenants, the atmosphere is incredibly relaxed, allowing guests to enjoy tastings or sip on a glass while learning about their sustainable winemaking practices. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned wine lover, this venue is all about good vibes, exceptional wines, and a shared appreciation for both regions!
#11 Black Button Distilling
Located in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts, Black Button Distilling showcases the art of craft distilling with high-quality, small-batch spirits including bourbon, gin, vodka, and whiskey made from locally sourced ingredients. Founded in 2012 by Jason Barrett, whose family has deep ties to the city, Black Button embodies a perfect blend of tradition and innovation in every bottle. Their meticulous attention gives each sip a taste of Rochester’s spirit, making it a must-visit spot for craft spirit enthusiasts. As a bourbon lover, I found myself drawn to Black Button Distilling.
Black Button Distilling is particularly known for its “Rochester Style” Bourbon. Crafted from New York-grown grains, this bourbon matures in Rochester’s varying seasons, giving it a unique character that is rich, smooth, and slightly spicy. It’s bourbon made with heart.
During my visit, I met two incredibly passionate distillers, Jeff and Jack, who eagerly shared stories about their craft, blending processes, and products.
I’ve experienced many brewery and distillery tours, some more enthusiastic than others, but these guys are genuinely passionate about their work, and their enthusiasm is contagious. I even got a special behind-the-scenes look at their space, where Jack and Jeff maintain meticulous notes on their blending processes—and yes, I even got to sample some of their latest creations, which remain a secret for now.

#12 Rohrbach Brewing Co.
Founded in 1991, Rohrbach Brewing Co. was Rochester’s first craft brewery, kickstarting the local craft beer revolution. Inspired by the town of Rohrbach in Germany, its founder brought European brewing traditions to Upstate New York. Today, Rohrbach is a regional favorite known for a diverse range of classic and seasonal beers. The cozy taproom offers a relaxed vibe, complete with game options like shuffleboard.
I enjoyed their brews; my sampling included the Bomb Pop Fruited Sour, Breaking Chains Lager, Blueberry Ale, and Highland Lager. Very fruity and lagery, yes? If your taste preferences align with mine, you won’t be disappointed!
#13 Iron Smoke Distillery
Iron Smoke Distillery, located in Fairport, is the kind of place where you’ll walk in and instantly feel at home. The taproom exudes a cozy vibe, ideal for enjoying smooth, smoky bourbon with friends. The ambient lighting, rich woodwork, and welcoming space create a comfortable atmosphere. Instead of traditional tables, expect large, plush chairs and couches that make you feel right at home—it’s the kind of place you’d envision as a chic Velvet Underground.
Adding to the experience, live music often plays while you sip your drink, enhancing the relaxed, intimate vibe. Whether you’re there for the whiskey or live tunes, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and let the evening unfold.
I had to try a few of their seasonal bourbon cocktails, including the Six Feet Under and Harvest Mule. In the spirit of supporting local, I also brought home a bottle of bourbon to recreate their smoky Peacemaker cocktail on a chilly evening back in Toronto.
Where to Stay In Rochester
The Strathallan Hotel is undoubtedly one of the best places to stay in Rochester. Disclaimer: It’s the only hotel I’ve stayed at in Rochester, so my standards are set high! Its luxurious accommodations, fantastic location in the historic East End, and exceptional amenities, including a rooftop bar and fitness center, make it the perfect retreat for relaxation and exploration. The attentive service and spacious rooms create a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, you’re just steps away from some of Rochester’s top attractions, restaurants, and cultural sites, granting easy access to everything the city has to offer while enjoying comfort.
A one-bedroom suite at The Strathallan Hotel offers a perfect blend of luxury and comfort. The large suite features a separate living area, giving you plenty of room to relax or entertain. My room had a couch, a work desk, and large windows that filled the space with natural light. I had a balcony to enjoy morning coffee or evening cocktails.
The bedroom was designed for restful sleep, featuring a plush king-size bed with premium linens, ensuring a peaceful night. The suite also boasts a spacious bathroom with quality toiletries, and a kitchenette equipped with a wet bar, microwave, and fridge for extra convenience. Best Way To Get Around Rochester
My stay at the Strathallan Hotel positioned me perfectly for easy navigation around Rochester. Typically, I prefer to walk, drive, or rent an electric scooter while exploring (which is exactly what I did). I found everything was conveniently located just minutes away, such as the Strong Museum of Play and One Fringe Place.
If I needed to drive in style, I opted for an Uber, and I was fortunate to find ample free parking at the hotel. Getting to hotspots like High Falls or Strangebird Brewery was a quick drive. When I ordered an Uber, my wait time never exceeded 8 minutes! Alternatively, electric scooters and bikes provide a fun, eco-friendly way to zip around town at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour!
