Ocean Beaches on Vancouver Island

There’s hardly a corner of Vancouver Island that doesn’t debut a stunning beach. Whether you’re exploring the rugged west coast or the quieter east side, some of the finest beaches in both BC and Canada are here. While it’s hard to choose from so many fabulous options, here are our top four beaches on Vancouver Island!

1. Chesterman Beach

Locals in Tofino appreciate a good beach, and Chesterman is a beloved favorite, frequently ranked among Canada’s top ten beaches. Its unique shape resembles two crescents connected by a sandy spit, presenting a nearly two-beach experience. Known as North and South Beach, both sides are equally breathtaking.

A popular surfing spot, this beach is an ideal place to enroll your kids in a surf school! If surfing isn’t their passion, the expansive, sandy landscapes framed by stunning forests and mountains offer ample opportunity for exploration. You can investigate tide pools, fly kites, venture out to climb Frank Island, or try paddleboarding or kayaking. Keep an eye on the horizon—you might spot humpback or grey whales swimming by.

There is parking available at both North and South Beach, along with washrooms and surf showers. However, there are no shops or cafes directly on the beach, so it’s wise to stock up in the nearby town of Tofino.

Best For: Surfers, surf watchers, beachcombers, and sandcastle enthusiasts.

Budget: Ecolodge – Tofino | Mid-Range: Sienna’s Tree House (Tall Trees And Salty Breeze) | Luxury: Middle Beach Lodge

Tofino is a popular tourist destination with high demand for accommodations, so it’s recommended to book early to secure your stay.

2. Mackenzie Beach

Mackenzie Beach, with its sheltered shores, is a favorite among families visiting Tofino. Unlike many beaches in the surf-rich region, Mackenzie features relatively calm waters. Nestled between rock formations, this beach is ideal for paddleboarding, swimming, and wading for little ones.

If swimming is not on your agenda, the sandy expanse invites beachcombing and discovering tide pools filled with sand dollars and other treasures. Build sandcastles or explore the rugged tidal boulders along the shoreline.

Pparking and a beach access ramp are available from Hellesen Drive, which is easy and stroller-friendly. Beach showers and toilets are also located there, and you’ll find the most shelter at the southern end of the beach.

Best For: Families seeking calm waters near Tofino.

Budget: Mackenzie Beach Resort | Mid-Range: Ocean Village | Luxury: Middle Beach Lodge

3. Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park

As one of Vancouver Island’s favorite vacation spots, Rathtrevor Beach earns its place on our list. Located on the island’s east coast, this beach offers a gentler and more family-friendly atmosphere compared to the rugged beaches of the west coast.

What makes Rathtrevor Beach stand out is its water. When the tide goes out, it recedes nearly a kilometer, revealing a vast sandy expanse dotted with tide pools. When the tide returns, the water stays shallow, providing some of the warmest ocean water in Canada—perfect for paddling and splashing around.

The park is adorned with shaded camping spots nestled among ancient forests, with ample amenities at both the campgrounds and day-use picnic grounds. There are picnic areas, a playground, hiking and biking trails, drinking water, and toilet facilities. However, be mindful that if you intend to chase the tide down to the mark, you may find the return trip to the parking area quite lengthy, so pack enough food and water for the day!

Best For: Shallow water swimmers, tide pool explorers, and warm-water enthusiasts.

Budget: Paradise Seashell Motel | Mid-Range: Pacific Shores Resort & Spa | Luxury: Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort

There are numerous accommodation options around Rathtrevor Provincial Park. Staying in Parksville gives you close access to two other family-friendly beaches, Parksville and Qualicum.

4. San Josef Bay Beach

Situated within the remote Cape Scott Provincial Park at the northern tip of Vancouver Island, San Josef Bay is for adventure seekers. This beach features rugged terrain, dense forests, striking rock formations, and pristine stretches of unspoiled, white sand. It’s definitely worth the trek if you’re willing to travel.

The journey to the park is an adventure in itself, as it involves navigating a rugged logging road—ensure your vehicle is prepared for it. Once you reach the park, parking is available, but vehicles are prohibited from proceeding further. Access to some of the most beautiful and remote beaches in Canada is possible through a network of hiking trails that vary in length and difficulty. Some trails even require overnight camping for those ready for an extended adventure. Families with older children may find this option appealing; however, for those with younger kids or limited time, head to San Josef Bay, which is just 2.5 km from the parking area on a well-maintained, stroller-friendly trail.

The path leads you through a stunning old-growth rain forest, featuring majestic Sitka spruces. Upon reaching the beach, you are greeted by a sheltered bay flanked by lush rocky formations. At low tide, you can explore charming fern-fringed sea caves and unique rock structures that define Cape Scott.

Best For: Families with adventurous, nature-loving children who appreciate visiting remote locations.

Budget: Airport Inn | Mid-Range: Pioneer Inn by the River | Luxury: Kwa’lilas Hotel or The Quarterdeck Inn & Marina Resort

Due to the remote location of Cape Scott Provincial Park, most accommodation options are a two-hour drive away in Port Hardy, which is a beautiful and popular tourist destination.

Camping is permitted on the beach and is especially popular on weekends and holidays. Outhouses and food lockers are available because bears and wolves inhabit the area. However, freshwater is not provided, so make sure to bring your own. If possible, we highly recommend camping on the beach at San Josef Bay with a backcountry camping fee.

Vancouver Beaches & Southern Mainland Beaches

5. Spanish Banks Beaches

Located just 8 km south of Vancouver, Spanish Banks is an ideal destination for families looking for a city escape. While there are several beaches in Vancouver, we chose Spanish Banks for its diverse offerings. Three beaches comprise this area, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Perfect for families, these beaches offer extensive stretches of soft sand that expand even further as the tide recedes. When the tide returns, the shallow waters are great for toddlers. The well-maintained beaches feature volleyball courts, kiteboarding, quiet zones, dog-friendly areas, barbecue and picnic spots, washrooms, and lifeguards during peak season.

Take a leisurely stroll along Vancouver’s famous Seawall, which runs alongside these beaches. Enjoy ice cream or hot dogs from beachside vendors while relaxing on the sand and reveling in stunning views of the Vancouver skyline.

Best For: An enjoyable beach day close to Vancouver, BC.

Budget: HI-Vancouver Jericho Beach | Mid-Range: Carey Centre | Luxury: Ponderosa Studios

With a range of accommodation options near downtown Vancouver, these choices are among the closest to the beach.

6. White Rock Bay Beach

If you travel as far south as possible on the west coast, you’ll reach White Rock. This charming town is perfect for a traditional seaside getaway. The sandy beach is beautiful, stretching across a picturesque coastline, while the calm water is ideal for swimming and paddling. Top it off with a classic fish and chips shop, making it an idyllic spot.

White Rock shares the shallow waters and low tides of Rathtrevor and Spanish Banks, providing the same sandy play areas and warm tide pools. What sets White Rock apart is its long pier that extends with the tide, measuring an incredible 1540 feet—officially the longest pier in Canada. Grab an ice cream and enjoy the stunning view as you stroll along it, or let the kids jump off the pier at high tide, or try their hand at crab fishing from the end.

The beach is divided into East and West Beach, separated by a landform known locally as ‘the hump.’ A stroller-friendly promenade ensures easy access to both beaches along with washrooms, picnic areas, and cafes. Both East and West offer spacious, open sands, but East Beach tends to be quieter, especially during the summer months.

Best For: A quintessential seaside escape.

Budget: Cozy Holiday Home | Mid-Range: Grace Guest House | Luxury: Ocean Promenade Hotel

Only 35 kilometers from Vancouver, Canada, these beaches are perfect for a day trip. If you prefer to linger longer, here are some accommodation options nearby!

Lake Beaches in BC

One of the joys of British Columbia is the delightful choice between ocean and lake beaches. With a multitude of stunning lakes scattered throughout the province, you can take your family to some fantastic lake beaches.

Osoyoos Beach

Starting in the south, Osoyoos Lake holds the title of the warmest lake in Canada, attracting water skiers, wakeboarders, swimmers, and everyone in between. What better spot for a family beach day than at a lake with an average temperature of 24°C? This area boasts some of the best beaches in the lower mainland of BC, and here are our top picks.

7. Gyro Beach and Lions Park Beach

We’re combining these two adjacent beaches in downtown Osoyoos because they share the same facilities and are connected by a walkway, allowing flexibility in your choice.

Both beaches feature lovely sandy stretches complemented by grassy parks for those who prefer shade. You’ll find picnic tables, washrooms, and trees offering plenty of shade. Gyro has a designated swimming area and a floating dock for jumping, along with summer live music events on the grass. Meanwhile, Lions Park provides a boat launch and a large playground for children. Both beaches boast shallow water entries and sandy lake beds, making them ideal for family outings.

Being in Osoyoos means restaurants, cafes, and shops are just a quick stroll away.

Best For: Beach days on the edge of town, with an opportunity to visit local wineries.

Budget: Super 8 by Wyndham Osoyoos | Mid-Range: Avalon Inn | Luxury: Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Osoyoos, an IHG Hotel or Watermark Beach Resort

8. Cottonwood Park Beach

On the east side of Osoyoos Lake, you’ll find Cottonwood Beach, which the locals cherish. The surrounding area boasts vibrant flower beds and gardens, and the park has been designed for accessibility, with wheelchair and stroller-friendly paths leading down to the beach. Facilities include washrooms and picnic areas, and several eateries are just a five-minute drive away.

This beach features warm water and shallow entry like Gyro and Lions Park, but with softer and deeper sand that is perfect for little ones building sandcastles.

Note that there is limited shade during the peak summer months, so families with young children should pack umbrellas or shade tents.

Best For: Easy access for strollers and sandcastle enthusiasts.

Budget: Bella Villa Resort Motel | Mid-Range: Sahara Courtyard Inn Osoyoos or Best Western Plus Sunrise Inn | Luxury: Spirit Ridge, in The Unbound Collection by Hyatt

There are also many campsites nearby, with Cabana Beach Campground being a popular option.

9. Haynes Point Beach

This unique beach, beloved by locals, stretches out on a narrow spit of land extending 1 km into Osoyoos Lake. The provincial park features lakeside camping, hiking and biking trails, and wetlands that attract birds and nature enthusiasts alike. Facilities available include picnic areas, boat launch, washrooms, drinking water, and changing rooms.

While the beach surface is somewhat rocky, the water remains shallow and warm, and there are plenty of nature walks and bird watching opportunities to keep your family entertained.

Best For: Nature-loving children and camping enthusiasts.

Budget: Boundary Motel | Mid-Range: Lakeview Motel & Suites | Luxury: Shiraz Villa

Camping at Haynes Point is in high demand, so be sure to book ahead. You can easily access the beach from anywhere in Osoyoos and camping is also available here for added convenience.

Christina Lake Beaches

Traveling east, we reach Christina Lake, a contender for the title of warmest treelined lake in Canada. While it may not match Osoyoos in overall warmth, it’s less renowned and quieter, still a lovely spot worth visiting.

10. Christina Lake Provincial Park Beach

The trees provide ample shade around this picturesque beach, which features over 300 meters of soft sandy shore. The warm water is shallow, making it ideal for young children. It’s a family favorite due to the generous parking, washrooms, picnic tables, drinking water, and easy access for strollers or wheelchairs. The town of Christina Lake offers accommodation, cafes, shops, and restaurants, all within walking distance of the beach.

Unfortunately, you cannot camp at this particular provincial park beach, but nearby camping is available at Texas Creek Campground, just 10 kilometers away, around the lake’s east side.

Best For: A hidden gem by a warm lake.

Budget: Lakeview Motel or Christina Lake Motel and RV Park | Mid-Range: Lazy Dayz Cottage | Luxury: Brooks Lake House

Many accommodations around Christina Lake are in private villas and lake houses. You may also want to check out VRBO for additional options.

Shuswap Beaches

Heading north to beautiful Mara Lake and the picturesque town of Sicamous, one of Canada’s houseboat capitals. Don’t forget to admire the houseboats gliding by on Shuswap Lake.

11. Mara Lake Provincial Park  Beach

A small but delightful destination, Mara Provincial Park spans just 5.9 hectares. However, the beach is notably stunning—with better water quality, soft sand, and a clear lake bed, which some other beaches suffer from. It’s a serene escape from the hustle and bustle.

While camping is not permitted here, ample amenities are offered, including washrooms, drinking water, picnic areas, and parking. Given the popularity of water sports in Mara Lake, you’ll find visitors enjoying boating, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and swimming. Land enthusiasts will also find satisfaction here, as the abundance of soft sand and grassy space features trees for shade, plus easy hiking trails through the compact park.

Best For: Water sports and leisurely picnics at the lake’s prettiest beach.
