The choice of destination for your first solo trip can significantly impact your experience.
It can either enhance your confidence and encourage more solo trips, or, if the destination doesn’t meet your expectations, it may discourage you from future travels alone. Therefore, making the right choice is crucial.
Selecting a suitable destination for first-time solo travelers is the first step towards a future filled with adventure.
Some newcomers to solo travel embark on their journey without much thought, while others contemplate it for years before making the leap. This is evident from the numerous emails I receive from readers excitedly sharing their first solo travel experiences.
This post is dedicated to those who may be feeling hesitant.

How to Choose a Destination for Your First Solo Trip
I want all first-time solo travelers to have amazing experiences. Before diving into specific recommendations for your first trip, let’s explore what attributes make a destination ideal for solo travel. Here are some factors to consider:
1. Travel in a Familiar Language
You will be navigating and adapting to a new environment independently, so let’s make that as straightforward as possible. For your first trip, it’s best to choose a destination where you are comfortable communicating in the local language. Ideally, select a place where you are fluent in the language rather than just having a basic understanding, as high-stress situations can often hinder our ability to articulate thoughts clearly.
2. Choose a Destination that Is Considered Safe
With so many safe destinations to choose from, why complicate matters by selecting a place where safety is uncertain? While a dream destination might beckon, it’s often wise to save it for your second trip after you’ve gained more confidence in solo travel. I’ve prioritized safety when compiling the list of destinations below.
3. Getting to a Destination for First-Time Solo Travelers Should Be Easy
For your inaugural solo trip, aim for a destination that requires only one flight and easy transit from the airport to your accommodation. Multiple flights and modes of transport can increase the chances of complications. Simplify your travel by choosing a location that’s easy to reach.
4. There Should Be Interesting Activities to Join
Select a destination that offers a variety of engaging activities. Solo travel doesn’t have to equate to solitude all the time. Many cities offer accessible group excursions, cooking classes, or community events where you can mingle with others. A little planning can help ensure you don’t feel isolated during your travels.
5. Your Destination Should Be Just Popular Enough
Overtourism can be a concern in many destinations. While you may want to avoid overcrowded areas, it is beneficial to choose a location where you can meet fellow travelers and locals alike. The connections you make along the way often contribute significantly to a wonderful first solo trip.
North American Destinations for First-Time Solo Travelers
Selecting the top destinations for beginner solo travelers in North America was a challenging task, given the plethora of options available. Here are eight cities that are generally easier to navigate and offer a variety of experiences.
1. Savannah, Georgia
Savannah appears on our list of best budget destinations for 2023. Famous for its Historic District, the city also boasts stunning architecture in the Victorian District and the trendy Starland District, all within downtown. Don’t forget to explore the peaceful Moon River District, which showcases Savannah’s quiet Lowcountry.
2. Nashville, Tennessee
Nashville is a small city with a vibrant music scene. It’s easy to navigate, affordable, and home to friendly locals. Brightly dressed Downtown Ambassadors are available to assist visitors. For budget-friendly tips, check out “Travel Nashville on a Budget: 32 Free and Low-Cost Tips.”
3. Key West, Florida
Located at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys, Key West is a lively destination great for those who enjoy beach activities, fine dining, or simply relaxing. Staying near the town center means you can explore on foot, making a car unnecessary. Read about my recommendations in “A Perfect Day in Paradise.”
4. St. John’s, Newfoundland
Newfoundland is an unbeatable choice for first-time solo travelers. Canada’s easternmost province offers friendly locals, striking coastlines, and breathtaking scenery. The capital, St. John’s, is one of North America’s oldest cities, rich in arts and culinary delights, ensuring you’re bound to have fun—just don’t forget to try the local screech.
5. Montreal, Quebec
Montreal, primarily a French-speaking city, is still very accessible due to the large English-speaking population. It has a vibrant atmosphere and a unique European flavor, especially in Old Montreal. The city is alive with arts, culture, and festivals, making it a delightful destination. Don’t forget to try a Montreal bagel! Check out “Solo Travel in Montreal: Food, Art & Culture” for more insights.
6. San Francisco, California
San Francisco offers an incredible vibe with distinct neighborhoods and many popular tourist attractions, such as Fisherman’s Wharf. Consider biking across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and taking the ferry back. Enjoy the city on a cable car, explore the diverse food scene, and be sure to savor clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl at Pier 39. Don’t miss visiting the iconic City Lights Bookstore.
7. Vancouver, British Columbia
This city ranks among my top favorites. Like San Francisco, Vancouver is located near the water, yet its proximity to nature is unparalleled. Public beaches stretch for miles along English Bay and Stanley Park, and in North Vancouver, visitors can enjoy winter skiing and year-round hiking, all easily accessible via public transport.
8. Kauai, Hawaii
Kauai, one of Hawaii’s quieter islands, captivated me. Despite my desire to return to loved ones, I found it difficult to leave. It offered stunning landscapes, serene nights, and a relaxed pace. With one main road on the island, it’s hard to get lost. I enjoyed engaging activities while also having plenty of time to unwind and read, making it an ideal destination for solo travelers. International Destinations for First-Time Solo Travelers
Selecting the best destinations for first-time solo travelers outside North America was even more challenging. Here are eight international options to consider.
1. London, England
Yes, London! While I avoided major U.S. cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, London is a must-visit for first-time solo travelers. Stay in the city center, enjoy leisurely walks, and see the iconic landmarks you recognize from films. Engage with the theater and indulge in shopping. For budget tips, check out “Solo Travel London on a Budget” and “Where to Stay in London: Budget to Luxury.”
2. The Lake District, England
The UK is filled with delightful destinations, but if I had to recommend just one outside of London, it would be the Lake District. Its stunning beauty and welcoming atmosphere shine during the shoulder season when it’s less crowded. For itinerary ideas, read “London and the Lake District: 12-Day Itinerary.”
3. Malta
Situated in the Mediterranean between Sicily and North Africa, Malta is an English-speaking country with a rich history and delectable Mediterranean cuisine. The three islands that make up Malta invite you to indulge in beach activities and various water sports.
4. Dublin, Ireland
Iceland is an inviting and friendly country, making Dublin an excellent entry point for first-time solo travelers. Enjoy the lively pubs, theater, festivals, and exquisite food. The Epic Ireland museum is my favorite, despite not being a museum enthusiast. For more information, read “Solo in Dublin: A Fantastic Destination to Explore.”
5. Sydney, Australia
Sydney is an incredible city that offers both urban experiences and nature escapes. The friendly locals, along with its thriving arts, dining, and sports scenes, make it an attractive destination. For tips on budget travel, check out “How to Enjoy Sydney on a Budget.” New Zealand is just as enticing, but my experience is more rooted in Sydney.
6. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Discover the beauty of Amsterdam by exploring its canals and countryside, seizing opportunities to try new culinary delights. Few cities boast such high English proficiency while also offering a distinctive atmosphere. For a more in-depth exploration, read “Solo in Amsterdam: A City that Left Me Wanting More.”
7. Iceland
This young island country features some of the planet’s most breathtaking landscapes. I often refer to it as the Isle of Skye on steroids due to its remarkable beauty. A road trip through Iceland is sure to be an unforgettable experience. For tips, check out “A Road Trip Through Iceland.”
8. Belfast and Northern Ireland
I may have a personal bias towards this destination, as some of my family emigrated from Northern Ireland. Having visited many times, I finally explored it solo and fell in love. However, you don’t need a personal connection to appreciate Northern Ireland. From Belfast to Derry, and from scenic loughs to magical glens, there’s plenty to see and do.
