In this article, I will discuss the best activities to enjoy in Hong Kong on rainy days, ensuring you make the most of your time instead of staying cooped up in your hotel.

Hong Kong is one of my favorite places in the world. I was fortunate to spend over five months exploring this vibrant city back in 2013, and I was thrilled to return earlier this year. Be sure to check out our new article detailing the perfect five-day itinerary for Hong Kong!

A decade ago, I could leisurely wait for sunny days to visit the city's attractions. However, this time, my schedule was tight and the weather was less than ideal.

Unfortunately, Hong Kong's weather can be quite unpredictable, and even during the dry season, you may encounter rainy days. But don't fret! A little rain doesn't mean your trip is ruined. There are still many exciting things to see and do in Hong Kong, even when the skies are gray.

Places You Should Avoid When It Rains in Hong Kong

Before I share my list of the top things to do on a rainy day in Hong Kong, I want to highlight a few places you might want to skip to avoid disappointment. Many of Hong Kong's most popular attractions offer stunning panoramic views, but rain can significantly reduce visibility.

Stay away from these spots during bad weather:

Victoria Peak

As one of Hong Kong's iconic landmarks, Victoria Peak is often the least enjoyable during rainy weather. It’s not just about getting wet; the observation deck is perched atop a mountain and tends to be engulfed in clouds during storms, resulting in little to no visibility.

Even on cloudy, humid days without rain, check the cloud cover. If the clouds are low, you might still miss out on the beautiful views.

Star Ferry & TST Promenade (The Avenue of Stars)

While the Star Ferry operates even on rainy days and provides covered transport, the stunning Hong Kong skyline will likely be obscured by rain, making the trip less enjoyable. The same applies to the Avenue of Stars, where visibility is often compromised in inclement weather.

Sky100 and Ozone Bar at Ritz Carlton

Avoid the Sky100 observation deck and the Ozone bar at the Ritz Carlton during rainy weather. Both locations are perched high above the city, and the terrace at Ozone may be closed in the rain, leading to obstructed views from Sky100 as well.

Ngong Ping 360

You may want to skip the Ngong Ping 360 cable car ride when it's rainy. Poor visibility will limit your views, making the bus ride to the Big Buddha a more sensible option.

M+ Museum

If the weather is particularly gloomy, visiting a museum is a great way to spend your time. The M+ Museum is one of Hong Kong's newest, focused on modern art. They feature many fascinating exhibits, and I particularly enjoyed the one detailing the history and evolution of Hong Kong.

Visit One of Hong Kong’s Many Temples and Monasteries

Hong Kong boasts magnificent temples and monasteries. While many have outdoor areas, you can still appreciate their beauty unless it’s pouring rain.

Some of the best temples worth visiting in rainy weather include:

Chi Lin Nunnery

Wong Tai Sin Temple

Sha Tin Temple

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

Visit the Central Market

The Central Market is a trendy hub located in the heart of Hong Kong Island, filled with stalls offering local products, delicious snacks, bubble tea, and unique cafés. It's a great place to spend a couple of hours exploring and picking up souvenirs.

Explore Hong Kong’s Shopping Malls

Hong Kong is renowned for its incredible shopping experience, featuring an abundance of shopping malls. If the weather isn’t cooperating, consider a shopping tour to explore various malls around the city.

Some of my favorite shopping destinations in Hong Kong include:

K11 Musea

Hysan Place, Causeway Bay

Harbour City, TST

Elements, West Kowloon

IFC Mall

Pacific Place

Times Square

I haven’t yet visited HMQ, but I've heard great things about it.

Dine at Tim Ho Wan, Formerly the “Cheapest Michelin-Starred Restaurant in the World”

If you're near the IFC Mall, be sure to check out the original branch of Tim Ho Wan located in the lower ground floor of the MTR station. While it can be tricky to find, it’s worth the hunt!

Though Tim Ho Wan lost its Michelin star status as of 2022 after expanding to a franchise, it still offers delicious cuisine at affordable prices. I visited it back in 2013 when it was a Michelin-star venue, and it was just as tasty in 2023!

Now, there are many inexpensive Michelin-star restaurants to discover in Hong Kong—check out our list here.

Mid-Levels Escalators & Neighborhood

An additional place to explore is the Mid-Levels area, home to the world’s longest outdoor escalator. The surrounding neighborhood resembles London’s Soho, featuring an array of delightful restaurants, bars, unique bubble tea spots, and shops—perfect for a pleasant afternoon stroll.
