In places where individuals hold diverse views and perspectives on life, including differences in opinions, backgrounds, religions, and beliefs, disagreements are not uncommon. If these disagreements are not addressed constructively, they can escalate into strife, conflict, racism, prejudice, and, in extreme cases, war.
It is often said that variety is the spice of life.
Sadly, many people feel threatened by differing perspectives, which can lead to undesirable outcomes. This highlights the importance of learning how to coexist peacefully. Living together harmoniously requires us to accept our differences and develop the ability to listen to, recognize, respect, and appreciate one another.
In recognition of this need, the UN General Assembly declared May 16th as the International Day of Living Together in Peace. This initiative aims to mobilize the international community to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding, and solidarity.
The goal of the International Day of Living Together in Peace is to raise awareness and promote the desire to coexist in unity amidst our differences and diversities, fostering a sustainable world of peace and harmony.
History
The devastation caused by World War II had a profound impact on people everywhere, underscoring the urgent need to strengthen human connections. To prevent future generations from experiencing the horrors of war, the UN was established to enhance international cooperation and promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction.
This means that regardless of a person’s race, gender, language, or religion, they should be accepted by others and allowed to live in peace.
Following this, a Declaration and Program of Action on a Culture of Peace was established, serving as a universal mandate for the international community, particularly within the UN system, to promote a culture of peace and non-violence that benefits humanity and future generations.
Over the years, the UN has encouraged nations to work towards reconciliation and unity. Although this may seem like a daunting task, countries can achieve this by collaborating with communities and faith leaders to nurture forgiveness and compassion toward one another.
This concept embraces the idea that peace is not merely the absence of conflict. Instead, it requires a positive, dynamic, and participatory process that encourages open dialogue and resolves conflicts through mutual understanding and cooperation.
The International Day of Living Together in Peace aims to further promote reconciliation and ensure sustainable development by engaging with communities, faith leaders, and other relevant organizations.
Its purpose is to raise awareness about reconciliatory measures, acts of service, forgiveness, and compassion among diverse individuals.
However, achieving this requires eliminating all forms of discrimination and intolerance based on race, color, gender, language, religion, political or other opinions, national or ethnic origin, social status, property, disability, birth, or any other characteristic.
True peace can be achieved when individuals find harmony within themselves and with others.
Other steps toward achieving peace include:
- Choosing to love others rather than trying to control them.
- Practicing tolerance by appreciating the diversity and choices of others.
- Avoiding comparisons with others.
- Committing to making peace with yourself and others, and learning about notable world peacemakers.
