UNESCO World Heritage Site in Versilia, Tuscany

In the most recent episode of the Italia Slow Tour web series, which highlights the
Medici Villas of Tuscany, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Syusy Blady explores one of the
most secluded historical palaces near Florence: the Medici Palace of Seravezza. This exquisite villa
was commissioned by Cosimo I and is located in the beautiful region of Versilia.

Despite its remote location, this area was historically significant due to its
abundant resources of silver, iron, and marble. Over the years, the palace has changed hands
multiple times and has served various purposes. Today, it belongs to the municipality of Seravezza
and hosts a variety of events and exhibitions.

During the Medici period, the villa was a gathering place for notable figures such as Bianca Cappello
and Francesco I. It later welcomed Maria Cristina of Lorraine, the wife of Grand Duke Ferdinando,
who is remembered for catching an extraordinary trout—an event immortalized atop the original well,
the only architectural feature from the Medici era that remains intact.

Today, the palace continues to
honor Versilia’s culture and traditions through important events. To learn more, visit the
