Unveiling Our Solar-Powered Airstream Home in the Jungle

Date:

After a year of careful planning and design, we are excited to unveil our Solar Powered Airstream Jungle House — Casa Luna!

How We Came to Live in an Eco-Community in Costa Rica

If you’re new to our journey, here’s a bit of context…

Three years ago, my husband Siya and I attended the Envision Festival in Costa Rica with our 1-year-old daughter. We expected an incredible experience, but it turned out to be life-changing. On the last day of the festival, we discovered a booth promoting a new eco-village that was still in the early stages of development. Captivated by the concept, we spent two hours learning about it and decided to change our flight to Canada so we could visit.

A year later, we purchased land in this eco-village and spent the following year traveling across the United States with our Airstream. In late 2021, we shipped our Airstream from Florida to our new land in Costa Rica and moved here to make it our home. Over the past year, we’ve been building a new life in this beautiful country while also planning and designing a permanent structure for our land where our Airstream will reside.

Bringing Our Solar Powered Airstream to Costa Rica

Transporting the Airstream to Costa Rica was quite an adventure on its own. Since its arrival, it’s been sitting on the land without connections for water or electricity. The combination of rain and humidity in the absence of power created the perfect environment for mold to thrive. Thankfully, our solar setup from Go Power! came to the rescue. To combat mold growth during the rainy season, we used a dehumidifier powered entirely by our Go Power! solar system, which we had installed during our Airstream renovation. Without this solar system, we would have faced extensive renovations to the Airstream’s interior.

We are incredibly thankful to Go Power! for providing a range of solar products. Choosing them once again to power our Airstream Jungle House, Casa Luna, was an easy decision. If you’re searching for a practical way to embrace a sustainable lifestyle while enjoying modern conveniences, we wholeheartedly recommend Go Power! products.

What is Go Power?

Go Power! specializes in power solutions for individuals interested in living off-grid or needing backup power. They offer a variety of products, including portable solar panels, power banks, lithium batteries, and other charging solutions, all designed to help users generate clean, renewable energy for their homes and devices. These products empower you to harness solar energy, store it for later use, and power devices independently of traditional electricity sources. Their power solutions are perfect for anyone looking to minimize their carbon footprint, reduce energy costs, and enjoy the freedom of off-grid living.

We are thrilled to add a complete Go Power! system to our new build, which will include:

  • 6x 200W solar panels (totaling 1200 watts)
  • 300Ah advanced lithium battery
  • 3000W inverter/charger (this converts DC power to AC)
  • 2x solar controllers

Living sustainably and being eco-friendly are significant values for us. The eco-conscious products we’ve already incorporated into our Airstream exemplify this commitment. While we’ll connect to the grid, our new Go Power! setup will enable us to run most of our household on solar energy. Additionally, we plan to grow our own food and source water from natural springs on the property.

Our Airstream Jungle Home Design

After thorough brainstorming and discussion, we developed an exciting build plan for our property, starting with our Airstream Jungle House. The design aims to create an indoor-outdoor living experience, where the Airstream will be situated on a spacious deck featuring an outdoor kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room.

UPDATE: As you can see in the video above, we initially had a loft in mind but recently decided to eliminate that concept, significantly cutting our building costs. The final design now looks like this:

The interior of the Airstream will include a bedroom, a secondary toilet, ample storage and closet space, a dining area, and a secondary kitchen area that may evolve into something else over time.

We focused on maximizing our gorgeous landscape views, opting for a large open concept layout that eliminates the need for heating and cooling, relying instead on the natural climate to regulate temperature.

Excited for This House Building Journey

We are eager to begin constructing our Airstream Jungle home, making our dream of living in an eco-village a reality. Being part of a community dedicated to sustainable living and harmonizing with nature is incredibly fulfilling. This journey is sure to be amazing, and we can’t wait for the first steps!

A special thanks to Go Power! for sponsoring this blog post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are our own.
