Monica recently highlighted the Cantina del Vesuvio Winery in her blog post, and I felt compelled to share a brief review of our visit there—it’s truly a breathtaking location. The photo above is even set as my desktop background on my MacBook!
Location
As depicted in the image at the top of this post, the winery is nestled in an enchanting setting on the volcanic slopes of Mount Vesuvius, actually located within Vesuvius National Park.
If you’re planning a stay with us, you’re in luck! It’s just a 20-minute drive from Villa Di Martino. However, public transportation does not offer direct access to the winery. The good news is that if you book through their website, the winery provides a complimentary shuttle service. They will pick you up from the Circumvesuviana train station in Torre Annunziata Oplonti, conveniently situated between Naples and Pompeii.
History
This charming family-owned winery was established in 1948. Back then, wine was transported to Naples using horse-drawn carts. Eighteen years ago, Maurizio, the son of founder Giovanni Russo, decided to welcome visitors for tours and tastings.
The estate spans 16 hectares of vineyards, producing one of the region’s most popular wines, Lacrima Christi, which we had the pleasure of tasting in various styles.
Cost of Tastings
Wine tastings start at just €28 per person. Your experience begins with a guided tour of the winery and its vineyards, followed by a relaxing wine tasting at your table. Enjoy the extraordinary views while sampling some local traditional dishes!
If you enjoy the wine tasting experience, be sure to purchase a bottle from their shop before you leave, as their wines are unique and not sold elsewhere. They wish travelers to truly explore the land and its wines influenced by the local volcanic slopes of Mount Vesuvius.
Conclusion
After an invigorating hike up Mount Vesuvius, we found that visiting the winery was the perfect addition to our itinerary, and we highly recommend it!
