Where to Stay in Delhi for Tourists – Area Guide
When searching for a safe place to stay in Delhi, choosing the right neighborhood is crucial. Different areas of Delhi offer unique atmospheres—some are relaxed and green with plenty of dining and shopping options, while others can pose safety risks.
- Paharganj / Near New Delhi Railway Station – Unfortunately, this well-known backpacker hub is not the best place to stay. You’ll encounter persistent touts as soon as you exit the New Delhi railway station, attempting to guide you to commission-based hotels. The area also features small, dim rooms with no windows and is known as New Delhi’s red light district, making it unsafe for women to walk alone at night. Despite the attractive prices of budget hotels here, I advise against staying in Paharganj unless you only require a short rest before catching a very early or late train.
- Connaught Place (CP) – Situated in the heart of New Delhi, CP is likely one of the first areas you’ll consider when looking for accommodation. It offers a bustling environment with numerous shops and restaurants and is conveniently located near Rajiv Chowk metro station for easy city access. However, be mindful of the potential for outdated hotels (check reviews) and the noisy traffic, along with pesky touts approaching tourists.
- Old Delhi – If you appreciate the charm of ancient Delhi, staying in Purani Dilli might be for you. Surrounded by narrow lanes and spice markets, this area is rich in history. You’ll find stunning Havelis (restored mansions) and be close to major sights like Jameh Masjid and Red Fort. The drawback, however, is navigating dimly lit lanes at night, which may not be ideal for solo female travelers, even though locals are generally friendly.
- Karol Bagh – Popular among tour groups due to its abundance of budget hotels, Karol Bagh is slightly improved compared to Paharganj but is still not the best area to choose for accommodation. The main advantage is its central metro location, but I have personally felt uneasy walking alone here at night and would recommend female travelers consider other neighborhoods.
- South Delhi – If you seek a more appealing place to stay with a vibrant atmosphere minus the spammers and questionable hotels, South Delhi could be your ideal choice. Lined with parks, historic tombs, and leafy areas, along with trendy restaurants and cafes, South Delhi is my personal favorite due to its safety and ambiance. While it’s a bit further from the city center, the efficient metro makes it conveniently accessible.
- Delhi Airport – While choosing airport hotels isn’t common unless you have an overnight or brief layover, several decent chain hotels are located in AeroCity, just a five-minute drive from the terminal. Check if your hotel provides a shuttle. Recommended options include the Pullman AeroCity International Airport or the Aloft AeroCity.
