Must-Do Activities & Cultural Experiences at Lake Garda

Lake Garda, known for its stunning natural beauty, is also steeped in rich history, art, and cultural heritage, showcasing everything from ancient Roman ruins to medieval artistry.

One of the most remarkable historical landmarks in the area is the extraordinary Scaliger Castle. This castle, one of Italy’s best-preserved, is surrounded by the sparkling blue waters of the lake and is built with exquisite white-washed stone.

In addition to the popular Scaliger Castle, the Roman Villa in Desenzano del Garda boasts well-preserved mosaics and thermal baths that date back to the 1st century B.C. If you’re passionate about Roman history, this site should be at the top of your list.

For a truly immersive experience, visit the Medieval Village of Canale di Tenno, a remarkably preserved town located on Lake Garda’s northwestern shore. Here, you’ll find charming cobblestone streets, picturesque archways, and ancient stone houses.

Riva del Garda is another essential destination in Northern Lake Garda, featuring classic Italian narrow alleyways and spacious piazzas, all adorned with colorful buildings.

During our recent visit to Lake Garda, we stayed in the delightful town of Limone Sul Garda, renowned for its production of limoncello del Garda. A must-see spot is the Limonaia del Castèl, conveniently located within walking distance from the historic city center.

The Limonaia del Castèl, dating back to the early 20th century, was originally built to house lemon trees, which thrive in this area thanks to Lake Garda’s favorable microclimate.

Lake Garda provides the perfect setting for outdoor activities such as cycling. The Garda Cycle Path, accessible directly from Limone Sul Garda’s city center, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and crystal-clear waters. If you don’t have a bike with you, don’t worry—there are many rental options available.

Similar to Lake Como, Lake Garda is dotted with smaller towns, each offering its unique atmosphere. Some towns are bustling with cultural attractions, while others provide a more tranquil, nature-focused experience. You could easily spend a couple of weeks in Lake Garda and still not exhaust all the wonderful sights to explore!
